The Pioneer is happy to present the Tillamook County Holiday Gift Guide, which is designed to make gift-buying easy as well as to promote local merchants this holiday season.
Shopping locally is, after all, hip and empowering.
It’s hip because it’s “indie.” Yes, you could buy the “most popular” items from national chain stores or international virtual marketplaces, but would such gifts make a lasting impact? Would they suggest anything interesting or exceptional about yourself or the people for whom you bought them? Buying local means buying unique. When you purchase something grown, made or offered locally, you give a gift that speaks to a sense of place. It’s the difference, say, between ordering the gourmand in your life premium sea salt from The Spice Lab, or buying it from Jacobsen Salt, which makes its product using water from Netarts Bay.
Buying local is empowering because it strengthens the local economy, which means you are helping your friends and neighbors, who, in turn, have more income with which to help each other. For instance, statistically nonprofit organizations receive 250 percent more support from local small business owners than they do from larger businesses. Small business owners hire locally, which means shopping locally generates more revenue with which to create more local jobs.
When you patronize local businesses you also help maintain the region’s distinctive character and allow merchants to select products based on the interests and needs of local customers.
If you are interested in participating in the gift guide, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call 971-238-3492.
Meanwhile, mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 29, the day that many local businesses will participate in the national Shop Small, Small Business Saturday event.
In related news, if you would like to help the Tillamook Ecumenical Community with its annual Christmas Basket Program and make sure all local residents receive something special for the holidays, learn how here.
To local business owners and managers, thanks for taking the time to consider participating in our holiday gift guide. To local shoppers, thanks for shopping local!

Tucked away in Tillamook County, Debbie D creates sausage using much the same process praciced by her pioneer ancestors in the 1800s. Using superb quality, lean, ground Oregon beef, flavored with hand-blended fresh herbs, and her great grandfather’s, grandfather’s and great uncle’s recipes, she has made a very special sausage line. Low in fat and sodium, with a minimum of preservatives, this is a sausage for the health conscious diets of today. Meanwhile, salmon is our specialty.
