On Monday September 22nd, 101 year old Pat Patterson, retired Coast Guardsman put the first brush fulls of paint on the abandoned 1908 Barview Coast Guard Life Saving Station as the Oregon Scenic Railroad’s 100 year old McCloud 25 chugs past. Community members had gathered to launch the revitalization of this historic building, and enlisting the help of Pat Patterson to commemorate the momentous occasion.
Pat arrived in Garibaldi and was stationed at the Barview Station in 1943 and one of his first tasks was to help move the Coast Guard station to the new buildings in Garibaldi. As part of his duties was horse patrol, with the horses stabled in Rockaway and hay was stored in Barview. “This is a living piece of history, and so am I,” declared Pat. “Get me some more paint on my brush, we’ve got work to do.” Pat’s painting symbolize the community’s efforts to save and preserve this historic building. The Garibaldi Historic Cultural Trust/Friends of the Garibaldi Boathouse and other community members are coming together to work with the current building owners.

A community meeting is scheduled for Oct 4th, 2-4 pm at Garibaldi Maritime Museum to discuss the plans for preserving the 1907-08 Barview LSS – a crucial step in saving local history! For more information about restoring the Barview Lifesaving Station, savegaribaldipier@gmail.com
