On July 17th, from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM the Rockaway Beach Police Department conducted our fourth pedestrian safety exercise for 2018. In the two hours of focused enforcement, our volunteers made 129 crossings of the roadway. Only twelve vehicles were stopped in the two hour span, resulting in the issuance of four citations directly related to vehicles not stopping for pedestrians. These exercises have consistently shown a high rate of compliance with Oregon’s crosswalk laws. This latest exercise was no different, with 97% of vehicles stopping appropriately.
We are seeing more and more visitors to the Oregon coast. We ask everyone to remain vigilant on the roadways, whether as a driver or pedestrian.
