U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) Paving Project: Cornell Road to Sylvan Interchange – Construction starts in late February

Posted on February 18, 2021 by Editor

ODOT is starting construction in late February to improve approximately six miles of U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) by repaving in both directions from Cornell Road to the Sylvan interchange, including several on- and off-ramps.

We are also repairing bridges and bridge joints in the project. Curb ramps at each repaved on- and off-ramp will also be upgraded to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

Travel Impacts

In order to maintain a safe work zone for travelers and construction crews during construction, travel lanes and segments of U.S. 26 and on- and off-ramps will close to traffic on various nights. Traffic control with signed detour routes will be provided. Expect traffic delays.

  impacts during construction include:

  • Nighttime full closures of U.S. 26 at interchanges within the project corridor.
Traffic will be detoured to adjacent on- and off-ramps.
  • Nighttime single and double lane closures on U.S. 26. Single lane closures will begin as early as 8:30 p.m. and double lanes as early as 10 p.m. All lanes will open by 5:30 a.m. weekdays (later on weekends).
  • Nighttime lane closures and full closures of on- and off-ramps in the project area. These can happen as early as 9 p.m., open by 5 a.m. (later on weekends).
  • Lane closures on local streets, sidewalk closures and temporary ADA-accessible pedestrian detours where on- and off-ramps meet local streets.

Noise Impacts During Construction

Expect periodic construction noise, mostly from heavy equipment and construction trucks (example: required vehicle reverse noises) and other equipment such as paving and grinding machines, jackhammers, concrete saws and compressors.

Those working or living near the work areas may hear construction noise. ODOT will use construction noise mitigation measures to reduce noise impacts to surrounding neighbors.

Use the 24/7 nighttime noise hotline to reach a live person to discuss any noise concerns: 503-412-2349.

Schedule

Construction begins in February 2021 and will last through the end of 2021.
Schedule is subject to change.

Project Benefits

  • A new road surface will improve the overall quality of U.S. 26 and several on and off-ramps, resulting in a smoother and safer highway for drivers.
  • Bridge joint work will help to preserve and extend the life of this heavily traveled highway corridor.
  • Upgraded ADA curb ramps at on-and off-ramps will make a safer, more accessible highway for all, including people who walk, use mobility devices and who are visually impaired.
