By Robin Swain

On Friday October 14, Tillamook County Pioneer hosted the Rockaway Beach Candidates Forum. Sandra Johnson of Rockaway Beach was paramount in coordinating this event. Thirty-six people attended the Candidates Forum in Rockaway Beach with many joining by Zoom, as well.
Moderating this event, Lisa Phipps (not pictured), former Rockaway Beach Mayor and municipal judge, currently with the state Department of Land Conservation & Development. The Pioneer was pleased to have Lisa and the AAUW help moderate this event.

(Front to back) Mayor Sue Wilson, Councilor Terry Walhood Position 4, Councilor Mary Mcginnis unopposed, Cindy Kay Gregory candidate for position 4 and Charles McNeilly candidate for Mayor.

Cards were passed out for Citizens to write their questions for the candidates. Several people came well prepared with their questions already printed out.

Many of the questions were in regards to affordable workforce housing, several pertained to Transient Room Tax, how much the city actually receives and what it can be spent on. Another concern that was asked about, was Rockaway Beach’s water source Jetty Creek and logging practices around the watershed. Communication from the City to its Residents. Mayor Wilson said the newsletter would be back in the water bill starting in the spring. She also stated that she would love Town Halls to start again, as well.

You can watch the forum via the link provided.

Please note that due to technical difficulties one of the candidates opening statement did not record therefore, out of fairness, all candidates opening statements were edited out.
