GORDON’S UPDATE: Weather 5/15/23 – The Cool Down (Yeah!)

Posted on May 15, 2023 by Editor

By Gordon McCraw, Meteorologist for the Tillamook County Pioneer
Monday, May 15, 2023

Well, it was a hot weekend, just as forecasted, with Tillamook Airport reporting a high of 91 both Saturday and Sunday. The good news was the wind shifted a little after 1AM this morning when the temperature was 75; an hour later the temperature was 64 and fell to an overnight low of 54.

Today we have mostly sunny skies still, but there is an upper level low pressure area over the center of the state that could give us a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorms this afternoon with daytime heating. Winds today southwesterly 4-8, the afternoon high near 80. It looks like we keep a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms until around midnight, light winds, patchy morning fog possible, lows near 46.

Here’s a rarity… 9 pm in the middle of May (Sunday May 14th) and Tillamook, on the coast, is the warmest spot in western Oregon. That’s what happens with a strong east wind that downslopes off the Coast Range to the beach.

The low pressure weakens and drifts northward tomorrow, so we see a partly sunny, but dry day tomorrow, winds becoming southwesterly 4-8, the high near 75. The patchy fog chance returns in the early morning hours along with some marine clouds, lows near 50.

Wednesday, the ridge of high pressure builds in again, and we heat up a little with sunny skies, winds becoming northwesterly 4-8, the high near 77, with mostly clear skies and calm winds that night, patchy fog is possible again after around midnight, lows near 51.

Thursday and Friday we enjoy continued mostly sunny skies with highs near 71, patchy morning fog possible under some partly cloudy nighttime skies, lows near 50.

As for next weekend, partly sunny days with the highs near 69, and mostly cloudy nights, lows near 49.
