GORDON’S UPDATE: Weather 7/19/23 – More Sunshine, Smoky Skies

Posted on July 19, 2023 by Editor

By Gordon McCraw, Meteorologist for the Tillamook County Pioneer

Wednesday, July 19, 2023

This morning’s satellite picture showed a couple of things, first the smoke from the Flat Fire in southwestern Oregon is drifting northward so we will likely have an orange sunset today, and secondly, the marine clouds were pushing up the coast but only pushed inland right at the beaches. Both of these can be contributed to the high pressure ridge building in and peaking over the area today.  I suspect the stratus will push further inland tonight with the strong onshore flow, then as the winds die off later tonight, patchy fog is possible.  The low temperatures tonight are near 54.

Tomorrow the ridge of high pressure drifts eastward while a low pressure area over the Gulf of Alaska drifts southeastward towards British Columbia. The key word here is drift, in other words, not much will be changing, weatherwise, real fast. So tomorrow we see partly sunny skies after the marine clouds break up, winds becoming westerly 10-15 gusting to 30, the high near 66, the clouds return tomorrow night and the winds ease again so patchy fog is possible once again in the early morning hours, lows near 54.

Friday the high pressure ridge is east of Oregon and the low pressure area is still inching towards British Columbia, so for us it will be another mostly sunny day with the winds becoming westerly 10-15 gusting to 25, the high near 67. We will likely see the marine clouds again Friday night along with the patchy fog, lows near 55.

Still not much change over the weekend, so, Saturday and Sunday we see partly to mostly sunny skies, the high up near 70, and partly to mostly cloudy nights, depending on how far the marine clouds push in, still that chance of patchy morning fog, lows near 53.

For the start of next week, we see the ridge had moved into the central U.S. and the low pressure area is pushing into the Vancouver Island area with a trough of low pressure extending south or southwestward along our coast. This means Monday brings partly sunny skies, the high near 69, a mostly cloudy night with that patchy morning fog still, lows near 69.

We will go with mostly sunny skies for Tuesday, the high near 70.
