THE OCEANSIDER: Paving begins on Cape Meares Loop Road

Posted on October 8, 2023 by Editor
By Jerry Keene, Editor, The Oceansider

The Cape Meares Loop relocation project is nearing its final stages a decade after landslides forced its closure. Project spokesman John Henderson announced that paving began this week after a delay due to the spate of heavy rains that crossed the area in late September. Tillamook County Public Works Director Chris Laity was scheduled to provide more details at the October 7 meeting of the Oceanside Neighborhood Association, but illness forced both Laity and the ONA Board to postpone the briefing. The Oceansider will reach out to Director Laity this week for any details he can provide about when the road will reopen. Project updates are also regularly available on the Public Works Facebook Page.

Oceanside Action Partnership (OAP) Schedules October 19 Workshop to Recruit Project TeamsEarlier this year, the Tillamook Coast Visitors Association and the OAP joined forces to host three Oceanside workshops designed to identify and prioritize community projects, funding for which might then be pursued by the OAP or others. Now the OAP has invited Oceansiders to a workshop at which it hopes to recruit volunteers to serve as project managers, grant application writers and supporting team members for individual projects on the list.  The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 19 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. at the Oceanside Community Hall and will also be accessible for remote viewing. Here is a link to the OAP announcement and invitation. Meanwhile, the OAP continues to await action on its IRA application for recognition as a 501(c)(3) corporation.

County Schedules Forums to Introduce Commissioner Candidates
The county has announced two forums to introduce voters to the six finalists it named in the process to complete the term of retiring Commissioner David Yamamoto. Here is a link to the Press Release announcing the finalists and the forums. The first will be a public Candidates Forum on October 12 from 5-8 p.m. at the PRI Building in Tillamook. Candidates will briefly introduce themselves and then answer questions selected in advance and moderated by Lisa Phipps of the American Association of University Women. The second forum on October 16, from 5-8 p.m., at Tillamook Community College, will be a panel interview conducted by the County Commissioners themselves. Both forums will be available for remote viewing. See the Press Release linked above for details.

The Oceansider hits the big 30! How are we doing?
This edition of The Oceansider marks something of a milestone for our modest publication. Excluding occasional “Special Editions,” we are celebrating the issuance of our 30th weekly newsletter over the course of more than six months in our experimental effort to keep Oceansiders informed about events, issues and people of local interest. Along the way, we’ve grown a subscription list comprising more than 500 households, plus all of those who read it when republished in the Tillamook Pioneer. (Thank you, Laura Swanson!) This is a good time for your friendly editor to ask: How are we doing?  Send us your feedback on what you enjoy, what you don’t enjoy, and what else you would like to see us offer. We will post your comments on The Oceansider website and provide readers with a link to review them in an upcoming issue. Meanwhile, thanks for reading!
