Tillamook Swiss Society Forms Schwingen Club, Competes in Regional Schwingfests

Posted on July 18, 2024 by Cara Mico, Assistant Editor

The Tillamook Swiss Society is preserving Swiss culture and traditions with the formation of their own Swiss Alpine Wrestling (Schwingen) Club. This new venture has already seen success, with members competing in regional Schwingfests and demonstrating their skills and dedication to this unique sport.

The club recently participated in a Schwingfest in Frances, Washington, on July 6th and 7th. Their next competition is at the Portland Swiss Schwingfest on August 3rd, offering another chance for the wrestlers to showcase their prowess and for the community to show their support.

Meet the Wrestlers

The Tillamook Schwingen Club features a talented group of wrestlers across different age categories:

  • Cody Smith – Senior, 18+
  • George Durrer – Senior, 18+
  • Koi Smith – Junior, 15-17
  • Josef Durrer – Buebe, 12-14
  • Klaus Durrer – Buebe, 9-11

Josef Durrer has shown exceptional talent beyond wrestling by winning the Steinstossen (rock shot put) competition for his age group (12-14).

A Tradition of Excellence

The Tillamook Swiss Society is proud to maintain the cultural heritage of Switzerland. Schwingen, a traditional Swiss sport with deep historical roots, is gaining popularity in the United States, thanks to dedicated communities like the one in Tillamook.

Brendan Spahr, one of the coaches for the Tillamook Schwingen Club, is a seasoned wrestler who competed in Switzerland in May 2024. His experience and expertise are invaluable to the club, guiding the wrestlers as they hone their skills and prepare for competitions.

Join the Action

For those interested in witnessing this unique sport and supporting the local wrestlers, the Tillamook Schwingen Club will be practicing at the Tillamook Swiss Hall this Saturday, July 20th, at 11 a.m. This practice session is an excellent opportunity to meet the coaches and wrestlers, learn more about Schwingen, and perhaps even get involved in the sport.

The Tillamook Swiss Society invites the community to come out and support the wrestlers as they keep this vibrant part of Swiss culture alive and thriving. Their dedication to preserving and promoting Swiss traditions through Schwingen is a source of pride and demonstrates the strength of cultural heritage in Tillamook.

For more information or to get in contact with the club, please reach out to Brendan Spahr or visit the Tillamook Swiss Society’s website.
