Community Responds to South Prairie Elementary School Flooding – 100 People Help Move Materials, Books Dec. 18

Posted on December 19, 2025December 19, 2025 by Editor

The post appeared on social media yesterday afternoon, December 18th from Principal Lonnie Eggert: “South Prairie is flooding we need help …”

It was amazing,” said Tillamook School District Superintendent Jennifer Guarcello. “There were a hundred people there. This community shows up.” Because of the community efforts, there was no loss of materials — books, computers, etc. The army of volunteers were able to move everything out of the waters reach. Eleven classrooms were impacted by the flood waters and the central library/computer areas as well.  TSD#9 had restoration crews at work first thing Friday morning, December 19th, and they were assessing the damage and developing a restoration plan. The school district cancelled school on Friday due to the area flooding, and is now on holiday break. “We are working and hoping to have the school re-opened on schedule after holiday break,” said Superintendent Guarcello.  The major issue will be the flooring as the school is completely carpeted. An update will be shared next week as the restoration process begins.  “There were folks that were just visiting and some that had just moved here,” added Guarcello. “They saw the social media post and came to help.”

The social media post from Tillamook School District #9: Where do we even start? As many people have heard, South Prairie School flooded tonight (December 18, 2025.)In true Tillamook fashion our community showed up to help us move entire classrooms, to fill and haul sandbags, to clear storm drains, and to do whatever else needed done!! We had board members, administrators, parents, students, staff, grandparents, community members, and even people who were just visiting the community jump in and help. Thank you just doesn’t feel like enough. From all of us at the school district, thank you for being part of our village. We couldn’t do this work without you!!! ❤️
