The Tillamook Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across Oregon and the nation in the National Speed Enforcement Campaign from July 6 through July 31, with increased traffic enforcement focused on reducing speed-related crashes and improving roadway safety.
Throughout the campaign, officers have and will conduct additional patrols and targeted speed enforcement in areas where speeding has been identified as a concern. These efforts are made possible through dedicated grant funding from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT),
allowing the department to increase traffic safety enforcement without impacting local taxpayer resources.
Speeding continues to be one of the leading contributing factors in serious injury and fatal traffic crashes. Even a small increase in speed significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react to unexpected hazards and increases the severity of crashes.
“We want everyone to arrive safely at their destination,” said Chief Nick Troxel. “Slowing down is one of the simplest decisions drivers can make to protect themselves, their passengers, and everyone else sharing our roads. Our goal is not to issue citations, our goal is to prevent crashes and save
lives.”
This campaign follows the Tillamook Police Department’s participation in National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, when officers dedicated the entire month to education and enforcement efforts targeting distracted driving. That initiative was also supported through ODOT
traffic safety funding and focused on reducing crashes caused by drivers using mobile devices or engaging in other distractions behind the wheel.
Together, these traffic safety campaigns reinforce the department’s commitment to reducing preventable crashes through education, high-visibility enforcement, and community awareness. Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. By slowing down, staying focused, and driving responsibly, everyone can help make Tillamook’s streets safer for residents and visitors alike.
