History of Kilchis Point Reserve talk at South County Library on September 24

Posted on September 10, 2026 by Tillamook County Pioneer Museum

The area of Kilchis Point is rich with history.

It was the site of one of the largest permanent Native American villages on the Northern Oregon Coast. Tillamook County’s first European settler, Joe Champion, arrived via boat and landed at Kilchis Point. It’s the area where the “Morning Star” ship was constructed. And for years was the headquarters of the Whitney Lumber Company. Now, under the stewardship of the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, the 200 acres of nature reserve has continued to be thoughtfully cared for.

In a presentation at the South County Library on September 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm, Tillamook County Pioneer Museum’s Exhibit & Program Developer Jenny Teece will discuss the historical, cultural, and natural significance of Kilchis Point.

“Kilchis Point has been a special and unique place for people of the area for centuries,” Teece said. “The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum deeply cares for the land we’ve been entrusted to preserve. We hope that our interpretive work and stewardship continues to resonate with the community and highlight the importance of the area to the world.”

The presentation is free and open to the public. The South County Library is located at 6200 Camp Street in Pacific City.
