Astoria Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will be sponsoring several contests in the area schools again this fall. Information has been provided to area schools from pre-school through the 12th grade.
The Good Citizen award and scholarship is selected for a 12th grade student. Once selected, that student may also write an essay which is judged at the local, district and state level. State winners are then judged on a National level for additional scholarship awards.
Students in pre-school through 12th grade may also participate in the Junior American Citizen’s contest which has several levels of entries including writing and art. The theme for this year is “Celebrating 250 Years of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: Happy Birthday America! 1776-2026”.
Students in grades 5 through 8 in public, private or parochial school or those who are home school are eligible to participate in the American History Essay Contest. There is a separate topic for students in high school for this contest. There is also a new contest for students in 5th through 12th grade to create a video.
Parents of students who are being home schooled who are interested in information about these contests may contact chapter chairman Sue Glen at 503 861-0574.
