By Robin Swain

Summer Solstice was the perfect day for the Ribbon Cutting at the Anchor St Park. As Rockaway Beach City Officials gave their remarks and thanks to the community, the children eagerly waited to play on the new state-of-the-art playground.

The brightly colored playground equipment called to them like a lighthouse to a ship.

As soon as former Mayor Sue Wilson cut the ribbon, the kids were off and running! The slides, merry-go-round, climbing apparatus… were filled with the sounds of happy kids playing.

City Manager Luke Shepard, Mayor Charles McNeilly, Former Mayor Sue Wilson

City Manager Luke Shepard stated, “This project includes the installation of a new two-unit restroom facility, two new playgrounds, event space with utilities and parking for 43 vehicles”. Mayor McNeily added, “Rockaway Beach can always use more parking”. Mayor McNeily continued, “ this started as a line item in the transportation plan. A few years ago it was picked up by former Mayor Wilson and  put on the administrative task list, handed over to City Manager Luke Shepard to make this come to fruition”.

Rockaway Beach Public Works did an amazing job! They put down 37,000 pounds of fall protection rubber matting.  They are very proud of all the safety features they installed and are happy to announce that the entire park is ADA compliant and accessible to everyone. Bring your pets as well! There is a designated pet area, too!

Former Mayor Sue Wilson, had the honor of cutting the ribbon to officially open Anchor Street Park.
