Posted on June 20, 2024 by Editor

(MANZANITA, OR. June 2024) Dr. Jonathan Allan, a registered geologist with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI), will speak about the risk of tsunamis and earthquakes in Oregon coastal areas at a free program on Friday, June 28, 2024 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm at Pine Grove Community House in downtown Manzanita. The public is invited to attend this event sponsored by Emergency Volunteer Corps of Nehalem Bay (EVCNB).
Dr. Allan, DOGAMI’s geomorphologist, has undertaken research on a variety of topics including coastal change mapping, coastal flooding, and the effects of tsunami. He established the Oregon Beach Shoreline Mapping and Analysis Program and currently leads the tsunami modeling and mapping program for the State of Oregon. His area of expertise is measuring the potential economic and societal impacts of a Cascadia earthquake and tsunami on the Oregon coast.

Prior to joining DOGAMI, Dr. Allan worked as a post-doc at Oregon State University in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. His work included studying the effects of extreme storms on Oregon beaches, coastal earthquake, and tsunami risk assessment.
For more than 15 years, EVCNB has been recognized as one of the leading emergency preparedness organizations in the State of Oregon and is sponsoring this talk by Dr. Allan to give attendees the most complete and up-to-date information about the tsunami risk facing Oregon coastal communities.

The Emergency Volunteer Corps of Nehalem Bay (EVCNB) is a non-profit organization dedicated to building personal, community and regional resilience, developing programs to ensure readiness, and promoting a culture of emergency preparedness.
