GORDON’S UPDATE: Weather 1/2/24; 2023 Weather Recap – Some Numbers

Posted on January 2, 2024 by Editor

By Gordon McCraw, Meteorologist for the Tillamook County Pioneer
First off, Happy New Year. To give you a weather wrap up of last year, here are some of the numbers from Tillamook in 2023. Remember, these numbers are a snapshot of a single location in the county so the numbers at your exact location may, and will be different! The hottest day in 2023 was 8/14/2023 when it reached 95 degrees, the coldest day was on 02/25/2023 when the temperature fell to 19 degrees. The strongest gust in town was on 06/04/2023 when a gust hit 43, obviously other areas saw higher and lower numbers, especially down at the coast. December was the wettest month with 15.41” of rain, no surprise there, and July was the driest month with only 0.13” of rain. Tillamook received about 72.43” of rain for the year, the yearly average for Tillamook is around 87.99”.

So, yesterday, the first day of 2023, the morning low temperature was 32, and the afternoon high was 52, and it was dry. Today though, the area saw a fast moving front pushing in mainly light rain early this morning that continued through around lunchtime when the rain started to diminish. We still see some scattered showers this evening then tonight they become a little more frequent as a trough of low pressure moves towards the area. The winds tonight from the east at 5-10, the overnight lows near 42.

Tomorrow looks mostly cloudy with some more showers, winds still easterly before becoming southerly 8-12, highs near 52, the lows near 43. The two day precipitation total likely still less than ¼” of rain.

Thursday the activity eases some, there will still be some showers moving though, the winds remain southerly 5-10 and the high up near 53. It looks like another trough of low pressure will be approaching the area Thursday night, and that brings another chance of rain later that night, lows near 42.

This means we can look forward to more rain on Friday and this system looks to have a little more moisture associated with it so we could see periods of moderate rain. By Friday night some breezy northwesterly winds will be pulling in some colder temperatures that will bring down the snow levels, so, Friday is rainy with a high near 51, then cloudy, rainy, and breezy Friday night, the lows near 39.

Saturday is rainy, the snow level dropping to near 2400’, and the high only near 48, more rain expected Saturday night, the snow level drops to near 2200’ with the low temperature down near 35 degrees.

Sunday also looks rainy and cool, the snow level bottoms out at around 2100’ Sunday morning, then the temperatures start to moderate with the high near 49, the snow level lifting to near 2300’, and the low temperature that night near 38.

It looks like we will also see some periods of rain on Monday as well.
