Dear Randall,
Trump’s lawless federal immigration agents senselessly executed Alex Pretti just two weeks after killing Renee Good in Minneapolis.
In Oregon, ICE detained an entire family while seeking emergency medical care.
And a leaked memo shows that ICE is instructing agents that they can enter homes without judicial warrants—a clear violation of the Constitution.
We are experiencing Trump tighten his authoritarian grip in real time, and members of our communities are paying with their lives. It is horrific.
We in Congress took an oath to serve our constituents and our Constitution. That means taking decisive action. Kristi Noem must immediately resign or be fired. And Congress must not send one more dollar to fund ICE’s lawless activities.
I cannot in good conscience vote for any government funding bill that includes funding for ICE’s campaign of terror in Oregon and across the country. Federal agents under the Trump Administration are operating with virtually no transparency or accountability. That needs to end.
If Republicans want to avoid a government shutdown, they need to separate the DHS funding bill from the package of government funding bills before the Senate right now. And we need real reforms to federal agent operations.
That is why I will continue to fight for full transparency and independent investigations, as well as for concrete reforms that will hold federal immigration agents accountable for misconduct, respect due process, and require them to clearly identify themselves.
I won’t sugar coat it. The American people have lost trust in DHS as we’ve been told lie after lie after lie. The Trump Administration is asking us not to believe what we see with our own eyes. Moving forward from this will require dismantling ICE as we know it and rebuilding an immigration enforcement agency that respects the rule of law and the dignity of each person.
That is what I’m fighting for in the Senate—because no family should be afraid to seek medical care. No child should be afraid to leave their home to go to school. And no one should be afraid of being killed in the street by a federal agent.
Voting to give ICE more funding would be condoning ICE’s invasion of our communities and would be turning my back on the oath I took to serve our Constitution and the people of Oregon and our nation. I will continue to demand real accountability and fight to protect our communities.
All my best,
Jeff
