The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Beach Hazard Statement for the North Oregon Coast and South Washington Coast from 12 p.m. Friday, Oct 17, until 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19.
This means we have a sneaker wave threat. Please be extra cautious to avoid these waves, which can move quickly and travel further up the beach than normal. Sneaker waves are notorious for catching people off guard, knocking them off their feet, logs, or jetties, causing injuries and drownings.
“A Beach Hazards Statement is issued when sneaker waves create potentially life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions, and exercise caution when in or near the water. Always keep an eye on the waves, and be especially watchful of children,” NWS said.
According to NWS, sneaker waves can occur year-round, but the peak months for sneaker wave threats in the Pacific Northwest are from October through April.
