CLOVERDALE, OR – Nestucca Rural Fire Protection District (NRFPD) recently had the privilege of revisiting a memorable incident from 2018, a triple horse rescue involving three horses named Chip, Casserole, and Silver. While Silver has since passed away, Chip and Casserole are healthy, happy, and thriving.
Copa Farms invited NRFPD crews to spend the afternoon learning more about horse rescue, anatomy, and safe animal handling. The visit also included hands-on demonstrations in cow rescue and livestock handling, using Copa Farms’ Highland Cattle as examples.
“This type of training directly supports our large animal response operations,” Division Chief of Training Jeremy Neel. “It gives our firefighters the confidence and knowledge needed to respond quickly and safely when seconds matter. We’re thankful to Copa Farms for sharing their time, expertise, and for the chance to reconnect with these incredible animals.”

The visit served as both a learning opportunity and a meaningful reunion, honoring the memory of Silver and celebrating the continued health of Chip and Casserole.
CERT Training Strengthens Community ReadinessHEBO, OR – On Tuesday evening, the South County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) conducted a joint training with current members and Academy 25-02 recruits. The hands-on drill focused on search techniques and basic EMS skills, hosted at Nestucca Valley High School.
NRFPD’s Engine 87 crew assisted by acting as simulated patients, allowing CERT members to practice realistic scenarios that enhanced teamwork, communication, and emergency care skills.
“Trainings like these help us build stronger coordination between CERT and our firefighters,” Division Chief of Training Jeremy Neel. “It ensures we can work faster, smoother, smarter, and better together during real emergencies.”

NRFPD proudly sponsors the South County CERT. “They are dedicated team of community members who give their time and effort to help their neighbors in times of need,” Neel. The district extends heartfelt appreciation to every CERT volunteer for their continued commitment and service.
Thank you,
