NORTH COAST COMMUNITIES FOR WATERSHED PROTECTION: UPDATES, MEETINGS & MORE

Posted on September 29, 2025 by Editor

Below is information about upcoming North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection events in Rockaway Beach and Astoria.

Rockaway Beach happenings:

The next monthly “last Tuesday” NCCWP Rockaway Beach meeting will be this Tuesday, September 30, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary by the Sea Parish Hall – 275 S. Pacific Street, Rockaway Beach

Meeting Agenda for September 30

1. Nedonna Wave development application denied:

We need to take a moment to celebrate the successful grassroots effort, citizen support, and vital assistance of Ocean Shores and the Crag Law Center that gave the Rockaway Beach City Council due cause to deny the Nedonna Wave application. The well-researched staff recommendations by the RB City Planner also played a key role in the denial.

2. Proposal to form task forces (outlined below).

3. Issues needing attention:

  • Nedonna Development – The developer’s application was denied unanimously by the RB City Council at the end of the hearing on September 9, but future actions by the City and developer need to be tracked. Task force? Volunteers?

  • The Nedonna drinking water aquifer and wetlands need permanent protection – Research and contact various entities that may be interested in helping establish permanent protections.Task force? Volunteers?

  • State Forest Management Plan – Focus on concerns and solutions for protecting all sources of drinking water from logging and pesticides. Four public hearings will be scheduled in November, with a deadline for comments in January.

  • Public Interest Environmental Law Conference in Eugene – March 12-15, 2026. Discuss potential for having an information table and/or a panel discussion.

FERNS refresher – How to be notified about logging and spraying activities in specified areas, as well as in specific drinking water supply systems.

Upcoming events:

ROCKAWAY BEACH STUDIO – FALL 2025 October 4th and 5  Again, this year Assistant Professor Ignacio López Busón and his graduate-level landscape architecture students will focus on the intersection of community and ecology. He is Assistant Professor in Climate Change Resilience in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon https://maps.network/   Last fall, Ignacio and his students created the comprehensive report and graphics about RB that have been on display at the Tillamook County Library.

On Saturday, October 4, at 4:00 p.m.  the new documentary “Free to Grow” will be shown at the Manzanita Film Festival, https://www.manzanitafilmfestival.com.  By the Emmy-winning filmmaker Jesse Andrew Clark, it follows rural Oregon families’ struggles to stay safe from aerial spraying of forestry pesticides.

On Saturday, November 8, at 1:00 p.m. the movie “The People vs. Agent Orange” will be shown at the Tillamook County Library (Hatfield Rm.) in Tillamook. “The People vs. Agent Orange” features longtime Oregon activist, and author of the book “A Bitter Fog,” Carol Van Strum. She will join us for a panel discussion following the screening. A key component of Agent Orange is still in use in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. The devastating aftereffects of the toxin remain lethal, demanding attention both in Vietnam and in the United States. The film highlights activists in both Vietnam and the US working to stop use of these chemicals and bring justice to those exposed. Trailer: https://vimeo.com/user37094368/review/460648960/ebcfe738a1
Astoria happenings: More info: contact pam.nccwp@gmail.com

NCCWP Astoria Chapter meetings are the third Wednesday of every month at 4:00 p.m. at KALA, 1017 Marine Drive, Astoria. We hope to see you there.  In November, we will be having a postcard writing event for the new forest management plan. We will also be strongly encouraging people to turn out for the local Oregon Dept. of Forestry meetings about the plan. ODF has not yet set the dates for those meetings.

On Thursday, October 30, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the Wild Salmon Center “Forest, Fish and Ales” event will take place in Astoria at the Fort George Brewery (Lovell Room). The Wild Salmon Center will be buying the first drink for the first 50 attendees.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to NCCWP.  You can donate by check or online via debit or credit card by visiting: https://healthywatershed.org/donate/.

NCCWP wants no more logging and pesticide use in community water sources regardless of who owns the land, and wants an end to pesticide applications near where people live, work and recreate. Safe drinking water and clean air are part of the public trust that we all are entitled to have. Please help North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection safeguard and restore our drinking watersheds. www.healthywatershed.org | www.facebook.com/NCCWATERSHEDPROTECTION       For more information or to unsubscribe, contact rockawaycitizen.water@gmail.com
