OBITUARY: John Michael Rieger – May 28, 1946 – March 19, 2026

Posted on March 25, 2026 by Editor

John Michael Rieger was born in Tillamook, Oregon on May 28, 1946. He passed away on March 19, 2026, at the age of 79.

His family was his greatest pride. He was a constant source of support for his children and found joy in being around his grandchildren. His happiest moments were simple and spent with the people he loved most. John and Penny’s 57-year journey began with a chance meeting at a wedding. Their connection was so immediate that they were married just three months later, sparking a lifetime of love and devotion. John was a deeply dedicated husband who spent his years working hard to provide for his family and tend to their home. Whether he was taking care of the farm, busy with his many woodworking projects, or simply enjoying his time in the woods, John found purpose in his work and peace in nature. He took great pride in everything he created with his hands and the land he tended. Those who knew John well will remember him as a man of few words but great impact. He was genuinely humble and entirely selfless, always putting the needs of others before his own without seeking any recognition. He also possessed a sharp, sarcastic wit that could lighten any room; you always knew where you stood with him, usually delivered with a dry sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ned and Vila Rieger. He is survived by his beloved wife, Penny Rieger; his siblings, Ed Rieger, Jim Rieger (Kathy) Tom Rieger (Sue) and Maggie Gallagher (Dan). He is also survived by his four loving children, Karen Reynolds (John), Jodi Hoffert (Gary), Mike Rieger (Suzi), and Shelly Morton (John). He is survived as well by 14 cherished grandchildren: Allen Hoffert, Taylor (Christina) Hawkins, Jennifer (James) McColly, Trenton (Olivia) Hawkins, Jordan Bingenheimer, Burgan Hawkins (Taylor), Madi (AJ) Harmon, Logan (Kaitlyn) Hawkins, Shelby (Brandon) Parrott, Brian Rieger, Bradley (Florisel) Rieger, Ethan Morton, Zach Hamilton, and Max Hamilton; and nine great-grandchildren.
