OP/ED: Taking Action Against Tariffs – Stopping economic policy that harms families & communities

Posted on April 27, 2025 by Editor

By Mimi Maduro

Following the daily flip-flops, “let’s make a deal” exemptions, and continual changes about start dates and amounts regarding President Trump’s tariffs can make a person just plain dizzy.

Tariffs as Trump’s cornerstone “economic policy” continues to shift daily causing instability, unpredictability, disruption and insecurity not only in in the stock market, but both also for small and large businesses.  The ripple effects can be felt in many small businesses in our county and state as every business owner needs to make decisions daily and plan for the future to keep their business viable and profitable.  Ultimately, the instability caused by tariff economic policy is and will be affecting each of us with higher prices for good and anticipated job losses.  The Budget Lab at Yale anticipates tariffs will affect American households with a $3800 increase in the cost of living.

Walmart, Home Depot and Target CEOs have met with President Trump & the Republican administration to talk about their concerns about the impacts of tariffs on supply chains and the ability to keep retails goods on the shelf.  Apple iphones have an exemption to tariffs due to a deal with Apple’s CEO cut with Trump.  Who’s next in line to make a deal?

Action needs to be taken to stand up and say no to this dismal tariff economic policy.

Oregon Democratic elected officials are not sitting on their hands doing nothing—Attorney General Dan Rayfield and Senator Ron Wyden are taking action.

This week Oregon’s Attorney General Dan Rayfield filed a lawsuit along with 11 other state Attorney Generals, to sue President Trump and other Republican officials over tariffs on goods imported into the United States.  This lawsuit challenges Trump’s executive orders on tariffs.  The other Democratic-led states in this lawsuit include Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York and Vermont.

In the coming weeks Oregon Democratic Senator Ron Wyden, along with Republican Senator Ron Paul, plans to introduce legislation to end tariffs.

Today I’m taking a moment to express my thanks and appreciation to Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield and Oregon Senator Ron Wyden for taking action to stop this harmful economic policy.   You can write to them about your questions, concerns and support their action opposing tariffs:  ( AttorneyGeneral@doj.oregon.gov and https://www.wyden.senate.gov/contact/email-ron )

Next Wednesday, April 30, marks Trumps 100th day in office.  The past 100 days has been a rollercoaster.  Enough is enough.  You can take action too by joining with others in our community protesting President Trump and the Republican Administration on Saturday, May 3rd at 12 noon at Sue Elmore Park in downtown Tillamook.
