The evening of August 17, Rockaway Beach Fire Rescue was dispatched to a report of a brush fire in the hills above Washington St. Upon arrival, a small fire, which was determined to have been smoldering for several days, had made its way into the root system of an old growth stump was found. RBFR with assistance from Garibaldi Fire Rescue and Oregon Department of Forestry accessed logging roads above where the fire was located in order to utilize our engine apparatus and get water directly to the fire.
We are happy to report that the fire was quickly extinguished and that at no time was public safety in jeopardy.
We thank our partners, Garibaldi Fire Rescue and ODF for their quick response and assistance.
This incident is a good reminder that Rockaway Beach and Tillamook County is still in a burn ban and only small beach fires and permitted backyard fire pits are allowed.

It is also a good reminder that fire can be a hazard at any time of year if steps are not taken to use fire safely. Whenever you use fire, whether for debris burning or enjoying a campfire, use these steps to prevent your fire from turning into the next wildfire.
- Never leave your fire unattended.
- When burning debris, always have a hose and shovel at the fire to prevent the fire from spreading.
- Check with your local fire protection agency prior to burning. (Most Rural Fire Protection Districts require a burn permit year-round.)
- If camping, ensure your campfire is in a designated area.
- Always make sure your campfire is out cold before leaving.
- On the beach, keep your campfire far from beach grass and driftwood piles; use water, NOT SAND, to put your fire out on the beach.
