VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR – BARB RILEY
If you have ever wondered who sprinkles a little extra sunshine (and a whole lot of helpfulness!) over our beloved Rockaway Beach, look no further than our incredible Volunteer of the Year, the one and only Barb Riley! Barb arrived in Rockaway Beach on March 17, 2007 as a part timer and transitioned in to full time beach life in 2017.We are pretty sure Barb has more energy than a King Tide! Since 2018, she has been tirelessly volunteering for Meals for Seniors, ensuring that nutritious meals and warm smiles are delivered right to the doors of those who need them most. She joined their board in 2020.
But Barb’s dedication does not stop there! From 2018 to 2023, she served in the USCG (United States Coast Guard) Auxiliary, keeping our waters safe. You might also spot her out and about with Paw Patrol, an informal (and adorable!) group of people and their canine companions helping to clean our beaches and town streets. Since 2023, she has also been a dedicated member of Adopt-a-Block, ensuring her neighborhood is kept clean.
She became a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member in 2018, and her commitment to preparedness shines through her active involvement as a Ham radio member since 2017. She is also a key member of the Rockaway Emergency Radio Group since 2018 and is part of the Rockaway Beach Emergency Radio Leadership group. And of course, she is an active member of the Rockaway Beach Volunteer Group, always ready to lend a hand wherever needed.
Even with all her incredible volunteering, Barb knows how to enjoy the Oregon coast life. When she’s not making our community shine, you can find her enjoying some fishing, or hitting the links for a round of golf! Barb embodies the very best of Rockaway Beach—the warmth, the community spirit, and the unwavering dedication to making our little slice of paradise even more wonderful.
As those who know her as a neighbor and friend, Barb embodies the passion and true spirit of community service, concern for wildlife, environment and of course of those individuals in need.
GRAND MARSHAL – PAT OLSON
This year, we’re honored to have Pat Olson, a lifelong resident and an unwavering pillar of our community, serve as our Grand Marshal! Pat’s dedication to Rockaway Beach is a testament to his love for this town, a love that has shaped his entire life.
Born and raised right here in Rockaway Beach, Pat’s roots run deep. He attended Rockaway Grade School and went on to graduate from Neah-Kah-Nie High School, laying the groundwork for a lifetime of contributions.
For over 30 years, Pat was an essential part of the City of Rockaway Beach Public Works Department, ensuring our town ran smoothly. But his commitment didn’t stop there. He also volunteered his time for over 30 years with the Rockaway Beach Fire Department, bravely serving our community in times of need.
Pat’s civic engagement extends even further. He dedicated a decade to the City of Rockaway Beach Planning Commission, helping to guide our town’s development. He was also a foundational member of the original Beautification Committee for over 20 years, contributing to the charm and beauty we all enjoy today. For more than 10 years, he brought joy to our holidays with his festive holiday decorating.
Even in retirement, Pat remains actively involved. He currently serves on The Hope Chest and Library Board, continuing his dedication to community well-being. Many of our cherished local landmarks bear Pat’s mark: he did the original work at the Wayside and was instrumental in updating and painting the train depot and Chamber of Commerce decking.
Beyond his official roles, Pat has always been a quiet force for good. He was a previous Elder at the Rockaway Community Church and is a strong supporter of Parks and Rec. He generously donates to Samaritans Purse which send toys and school supplies to missions around the world. He also provides assistance to many homebound citizens, embodying the true spirit of community.
Pat Olson is more than just a resident — he’s a living embodiment of Rockaway Beach’s heart and soul. Let’s give a thunderous cheer for our Grand Marshal, Pat Olson! You’ll see him in the Black Sting Ray convertible during the parade.
Remember – the parade starts at 11 am on July 4th. Watch for more information about all the 4th of July happenings in Rockaway Beach and throughout Tillamook County.
