The Oceanside Community Club (OCC) Board of Directors has begun an experiment to expand the availability of the Community Hall for local groups. While the Club already provides free access to organizations like the Oceanside Water District, the Oceanside Neighborhood Association and the Oceanside Action Partnership, the OCC Board is now inviting less formal groups to make use of the community gathering place. The pilot program was urged by Oceansider Carol Kearns, who recently joined the Board and is now coordinating the application process. She indicated that eligible group activities/events must (1) pay a $100 cleaning deposit; (2) be organized by an OCC “member” who actually attends the event; (3) provide signed liability waivers, and (4) not charge admission or be a commercial or for-profit event. She also emphasized that the Club will continue to prioriize paid rentals, especially during the summer months, to cover the Club’s utilities, maintenance costs and capital reserves. Other requirements may apply as the program evolves.

The Tillamook High School Chamber Choir entertained Oceansiders with carols at the OCC monthly potluck last week. The group was conducted by Austin Rupert.
Over the past two years, the group has quietly but effectively supported initiatives like the Oceanside Centennial celebration, covered liability insurance premiums for both of the Oceanside Art Shows, funded tech improvements to enable the ONA’s online meetings, sponsored a “lendable” radon detector program and provided a grant for the concrete picnic table and benches at the State Park parking lot adjacent to the Community Hall. Most recently, the OPS joined with the ONA Board to successfully intervene and negotiate on behalf of the community with regard to the (now withdrawn) proposal to replace the Current Cafe with new hotel units at the Three Arch Inn. (More on that in a future issue of The Oceansider.)
The OPS rarely conducts fundraising drives or actively seeks contributions. Over time, folks just hear about the good we’ve done and occasionally send in support. Our volunteer Board members cover their own expenses, which allows us to put all of those contributions to work in the community or in reserves for future needs, If you are minded to think of the OPS at this giving time of year, then we welcome your support and promise to put it to good use, right here in our beloved Village.
