THE OCEANSIDER: Sanitary District Buys Land Needed  for Expansion of Service to Avalon West

Posted on January 28, 2024January 28, 2024 by Editor

By Jerry Keene, Editor, The Oceansider
The Netarts-Oceanside Sanitary District has reached an agreement to purchase two lots in the Avalon East area of Oceanside. They are intended to accommodate future construction of a pump station for expansion of sewer service to homes in the area, which borders on The Capes development and includes Grand Avenue (west of Highway 131) and Reeder Avenue.  Homeowners there currently rely on individual septic tanks or systems. District Superintendent Dan Mello indicated that the locally-elected NOSD Board of Directors authorized an offer of approximately $60,000 (total) to obtain the two lots and easement rights on several other properties needed for installation of additional service lines. The current owner, Triangle Holdings II, LLC (an investment firm with offices in Portland), accepted the offer, and the transaction is scheduled to close later this month. The Oceansider has been advised that local realtors had some advance indication of the purchase and are already including the prospect of future sewer service in promoting the sales of affected homes and lots. This development is expected to increase property values in the area and enhance the prospects for further development.

Remaining ONA Officers Announce Retirement
As previously reported in The Oceansider, Oceanside Neighborhood Association President Sharon Brown and Vice President (former President) Jerry Keene have announced plans to step down from their positions at the expiration of their terms this summer. Since then, ONA Secretary Carol Horton and Treasurer Mary Flock have also signaled that they will not seek re-election. Brown has served two years as President. Keene served 5 years as President and 2 years as Vice President. Flock has served 15 years on the ONA Board in several positions. Horton has served two years as Secretary. The announcements open the way for entirely new leadership on the ONA Board for the first time in nearly two decades. Part-time and full-time Oceanside residents, as well as Oceanside’s business operators, are eligible to register as ONA members and to run for seats on the Board.

In the absence of a city council, the ONA is formally recognized as our unincorporated community’s representative to the County Commissioners and other external agencies, especially on matters pertaining to land use development and regulation, short term rentals and infrastructure improvements. Board members also have an opportunity to develop working relationships with county leaders in the Community Development and Public Works (roads) Departments. They also appoint and coordinate the efforts of ONA Committees, including the Emergency Preparedness Committee. The ONA Board will offer workshops this spring to provide more information about these leadership opportunities to both newcomers and longtime residents interested in “how things work” in Oceanside before the elections in June 2024.
