Tillamook’s 8th grade students are preparing for the experience of a lifetime: a weeklong educational trip to Washington, D.C. For many, this will be their first opportunity to see our nation’s capital in person, and the lessons they take away will extend far beyond the classroom walls.
The trip is designed to bring history, civics, and culture alive in a way no textbook can. Students will tour the U.S. Capitol to better understand how laws are made and how democracy functions at the federal level. They will walk through the Smithsonian Museums, where artifacts tell the story of our nation’s struggles, innovations, and triumphs. The group will also visit Arlington National Cemetery, where they will honor veterans and witness the solemn changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Time will also be spent at the National Mall, reflecting at memorials that preserve the stories of courage, sacrifice, and leadership that have shaped the United States.
“These are experiences students never forget,” said parent Rachel Voss. “It helps them connect what they’ve learned in school with the real places, people, and events that define our country.”
Of course, such a trip requires significant fundraising to make it possible for every student who wants to participate. The Tillamook community has always stepped up to support young people, and this year, families are organizing several events to help cover the costs.
The next fundraiser is on Friday, September 19, when the 8th graders will take over the Corral Grill Restaurant from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. During that time, students and parents will help serve meals, bus tables, and share information about the trip. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will go directly toward funding travel, lodging, and program expenses.
The second fundraiser is especially fitting for our coastal community. On Sunday, September 21, the Coliseum Theater will host two special big-screen showings of The Goonies—the beloved 1980s adventure movie filmed on the Oregon Coast. Screenings are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. It’s a chance to relive a classic film while helping local students embark on an adventure of their own.
Community support is crucial in making this trip accessible to all students, not just those whose families can afford the full cost. Every mean served at the Corral Grill, and every ticket sold at the Goonies screening, helps Tillamook’s young people experience history, government, and civic life firsthand.
The organizers invite everyone in the community to come out, enjoy a meal, or share in a movie, knowing that their participation is making a difference. As the students prepare to represent Tillamook in our nation’s capital, they are grateful for the encouragement and generosity of the community that stands behind them.
