WHAT IS CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE?
WHAT HAPPENS TO PEOPLE WHO DO IT?
CAN IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Civil disobedience has a long history. We think of Gandhi and Rosa Parks first, but people across the political spectrum, both anti-war and anti-choice, both tax resisters and draft resisters, all have engaged in civil disobedience. Results have been mixed. Subjecting yourself to the criminal justice system is not a decision to take lightly.
We will focus on these specific questions:
- Are there safer meaningful alternatives to civil disobedience?
- Does ICE care if you get arrested?
- What is the Whistle While You Work program?
- Do you have a right to engage in civil disobedience?
- How can you be civil and yet be disobedient?
- What is it like to get arrested?
- What should people do to prepare to be arrested?
- What do the Resisting Arrest and the Interfering With a Peace Office statutes forbid?
- How long will people sit in jail?
- What will happen in court?
- Will people need to have lawyers?
- What might be the consequences of an arrest or conviction?
- How can we support people who decide to engage in civil disobedience?
