There is a confirmed outbreak of Pertussis, otherwise known as “Whooping Cough,” in Tillamook County. Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory infection that causes violent coughing which can make it hard to breath. Those suffering from the disease endure intense coughing, often ending with a “whooping” sound. Whooping cough may begin like a common cold, but unlike a cold, the coughing can last for weeks or months.
Whooping Cough affects babies and young children most commonly and most severely, as well as older adults with underlying medical conditions such as compromised immune systems and moderate to severe asthma.
If you have a new unexplained cough or have been in contact with someone with pertussis AND have a cough, talk to your provider about testing.
The best protection against pertussis is vaccination. The vaccine is recommended for children starting at 2 months of age, during adolescence, and for pregnant individuals.
