The City of Rockaway Beach is proud to announce the arrival of a brand-new all-terrain track chair, generously provided by the nonprofit organization David’s Chair Outdoor Mobility Systems. This new chair replaces the original unit and continues the city’s commitment to expanding beach accessibility for residents and visitors with mobility challenges.
Funding for the new chair was provided by Travel Oregon, reflecting the ongoing partnership between David’s Chair, St. Mary by the Sea, and the City of Rockaway Beach to promote inclusive outdoor recreation.
The chair will be delivered to St. Mary By The Sea Catholic Church at 3:30 PM on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. The shed at the church will serve as the storage and access point for the chair, which is available for public use through David’s Chair’s reservation system. “We at St. Mary By The Sea are pleased to be in partnership with David’s Chair and the City of Rockaway Beach, and look forward to tomorrow’s new Chair rollout,” said Phillip Curtis.
Rockaway Beach Volunteers assist users who sign up through the reservation system, helping with chair access, safety guidance, and ensuring a smooth experience for all participants. “I counted the number of users in Rockaway Beach since January and we’ve created a special experience for more than 40 people. But if we also count the family and friends that shared the activity, well over 200 people have pictures and memories they’ll never forget,” said Bill Hassell, Rockaway Beach Volunteer member. The Rockaway Beach Volunteers are always looking for new members and can be contacted at rbvolunteers1@gmail.com.
“We’re thrilled to continue our work with David’s Chair,” said Luke Shepard, City Manager. “This new chair ensures that everyone—regardless of mobility—can experience the beauty of our seven miles of sandy beach. Accessibility is a core value in Rockaway Beach, and this donation helps us live up to that promise.”
David’s Chair is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides track chairs and Para Golfers free of charge to individuals with mobility impairments. Their Fixed Location Chair Program allows users to reserve chairs at scenic destinations across Oregon, including Rockaway Beach, Seaside, Netarts, Manzanita, and Pacific City.
The community is invited to celebrate this milestone during the delivery. Volunteers and city staff will be on hand to welcome the new equipment, and plans are underway to expand reservation availability as demand grows.
