Weyerhaeuser will be applying pesticides above Nehalem next week

Posted on May 23, 2020 by Editor

A 100 acre section, located behind the Nehalem Elementary School, is due to have the chemical application done by hand by 14 Weyerhaeuser employees. At least that provides discrete application to specific targeted plants and therefore is better than aerial spraying by helicopter, which can drift onto other than targeted acreage.
Peter Mitteman of Weyerhaeuser stated that the pesticides that will be applied are: methel sulfomaturon and clopyralid. Methel sulfomaturon can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness and fatigue. Clopyralid may cause esophagus or gastrointestinal tract irritation, labored breathing and red stains around nostrils, as well as eye irritation.
Our community needs to be aware of this imminent action! Call the Oregon Department of Forestry, not only about the dangers to human beings and wildlife in our entire region because of the rampant clearcutting, but certainly the threat to human health caused by the toxic chemicals.
Also, the community of Wheeler is being impacted by vast clearcutting being done by Stimson and may be facing the pesticide threat in the future.

TAKE ACTION! Call Weyerhaeuser (971-320-6004), alert your neighbors, get out the word on social media. Contact with the Oregon Department of Forestry (503-945-7200; email: forestry.information@oregon.gov) and our government representatives, especially Betsy Johnson at 503-986-1716. Tillamook County Commissioners meet on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 in Tillamook at the County Courthouse, or you can access a “live stream” or phone-in, go to www.co.tillamook.or.us

This alert provided by North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (formerly known as Rockaway Beach Citizens for Watershed Protection), the new name reflects our working together on a regional basis to insure that the air we breathe and the water we drink are safe. We now represent over 500 concerned families and individuals.
