On April 2, 2024 at approximately 1:15 pm, Cannon Beach Fire District (CBFD) was dispatched to a water rescue in front of the Tolovana Wayside for two victims being pulled out of the water.
Cannon Beach Fire arrived within minutes and found that both victims were on the beach, conscious and breathing.
An 18-year-old and 14-year-old were out boogie boarding with wetsuits, when their parents on the beach stated that they noticed the boards were not with them anymore. Thankfully, the 14-year-old was able to get both of them out of the water.
Both youth were transported to Providence Seaside Hospital by Medix Ambulance with one fire personnel on board.
As of 6:40 pm on April 2nd, both patients are reportedly doing fine.
Cannon Beach fire personnel later learned that the fmaily dog was pulled out as well, and the dog was safely extricated and in good health.
As we enter our summer months, Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District would like to remind everyone who intends to visit the coast to take these safety precautions:
1. If you are caught in a rip current, remember these life saving tips:
– STAY CALM and don’t fight the current.
– Swim parallel to the beach following the shoreline, then to shore.
– If you cannont escape, float or tread water.
– If you need help, call or wave for help.
– Stay calm.
2. Don’t go out in the ocean beyond your knees, and children should be within arm’s reach of parents – AND wearing a personal flotation device, even when just wading.
3. When in doubt, don’t go out.
4. If you see someone in trouble, call 911 IMMEDIATELY.
– Do not attempt to rescue them if you are at risk of becoming a victim yourself.
– Do not leave the scene until first resonders arrive, speak to you and give you the ok to leave. We need to gather information for rescue operations.
5. Keep an eye on all pets anytime they are near the water.
