GORDON’S WEATHER UPDATE 6/3/24: Showers today, rain tonight and tomorrow, then a ridge brings fair and mild conditions back

Posted on June 3, 2024 by Editor

By Gordon McCraw, Meteorologist for the Tillamook County Pioneer

Slide that closed Hwy. 101 at MP 41 on Neah-Kah-Nie Mtn. about 2 miles north of Manzanita today June 3, 2024.

A wet weekend brought the area around 1 ½” of rain to the Tillamook area while up in the Coast Range, Lees Camp saw just under 2 ½”, this all thanks to an Atmospheric River and cold front that pushed through. The area also saw some winds gusting between 30-35 at times which pushed some trees into powerlines causing a few power outages. ODOT has also been busy with some slides including one on Hwy 101 just north of Manzanita that closed the road for a few hours this morning, Monday June 3rd. Hwy. 101 has re-opened but watch for crews working to clean-up the slide.

Now today we have a low pressure area west of British Columbia that is rotating some showers across so we can expect a few more scattered showers today along with some possible breezy southwesterly winds 10-15 gusting to 25, today’s high was in the mid and upper 50s. Tonight, the rain returns as another system pushes towards the area with some southerly winds 10-15 gusting to 25, the low tonight near 49.

The rain continues through tomorrow morning until the front finally moves through around noon, then we transition back to scattered showers that ease later tomorrow afternoon, winds southerly 10-15 gusting to 25, highs near 61. Tomorrow night it looks like high pressure starts to build in, capping the shower activity, and with the moisture, calm winds, and clearing skies, patchy morning fog is possible, lows near 45.

The fair skies and milder temperatures return Wednesday as the ridge continues to build in over the area, so Wednesday is looking sunny with northerly winds 4-8, the high near 66, then a mostly clear night, light winds, lows near 45.

The models show the ridge drifting across the area Thursday, so we see another sunny day with light winds, highs up to near 70, mostly clear skies again Wednesday night, lows near 49.

With the ridge axis over our area Friday, the temperatures climb up to near 77 here in our area because we are able to keep a little of the marine effect while the valley is not so lucky, it is looking at highs possibly in the 90s. The low that night near 50.

The ridge shifts east of the area Saturday so the high only up near 72, though we keep the mostly sunny skies, and with partly cloudy skies Saturday night, lows still remain around 50. By Sunday, with the onshore flow building, we see partly sunny skies, the highs only near 65, the lows near 47.

As for the extended outlook through the first half of June, as you can see, the NWS Climate Prediction Center Outlook issued June 3rd for the period of June 11th through June 17th is leaning toward the area seeing above normal Temperatures and below normal Precipitation for that period. Remember also, Summer officially begins on June 20.
