A Coffee Connoisseur’s Haven in San Mateo

Posted on August 31, 2024 by Cara Mico, Assistant Editor

If you’re cruising through San Mateo with a hankering for something beyond your average cup of joe, make a beeline for Kaizen & Coffee. This isn’t just a coffee shop; it’s a temple for coffee aficionados and pastry lovers alike.

I indulged in the Columbia Pitalito Aroma Nativo, a pink bourbon varietal that’s undergone a honey double fermentation process. Grown at 1,600 meters, this coffee was an aromatic journey with a sweetness that danced on the palate, balanced beautifully with a mild acidity, and left a floral whisper long after the last sip.

Their medium roast house blend deserves applause too. Three hours post-sip, and I was still enjoying its caramel and berry notes, with no hint of bitterness creeping in. That’s quality.

Their collaboration with Neighbor Bakery from San Francisco brings some of the best pastries I’ve had. The ham and cheese croissant? A flaky, savory masterpiece. And for those with a sweet tooth, you’re in for a treat.

Perfectly ripe avocado spread over toasted bread – simple, yet executed with finesse.

The vibe at Kaizen & Coffee is vibrant yet cozy, with a cleanliness that’s as refreshing as their coffee. The staff? They’re the kind of people who remember your name and your order, even when the place buzzes with activity. Their efficiency with pour-overs, which are an art form here, is impressive. Their ceremonial grade matcha is a must-try, along with a selection of other high-quality teas. And for something unique, their black sesame or caramel matcha drinks are innovative and delicious.

The price point might make your wallet wince if you’re a daily visitor, but for an occasional treat or a special outing, Kaizen & Coffee offers an experience that justifies every penny. It’s the kind of place where each sip feels like a luxury, and every visit feels like a discovery.

Kaizen & Coffee isn’t just about getting your caffeine fix; it’s about savoring it. Whether you’re there for the meticulously sourced beans, the exquisite pastries, or just the warm, welcoming atmosphere, this spot in San Mateo is a gem worth exploring. If you’re in the area, treat yourself. Your taste buds will thank you, and you might just find your new favorite coffee haunt.

For local Manzanita coffee lovers consider ordering these and shipping them, they are worth tasting and perhaps even carrying some of the roasters.
