(GARIBALDI, OR) — A one-mile stretch of U.S. 101 through the heart of Garibaldi has been transformed with new pavement, sidewalks, curb ramps, bus stop pull-outs and drainage improvements—making the busy coastal corridor safer, smoother and more accessible for everyone. As part of the Garibaldi Days celebration on July 26, 2025, city leaders and ODOT representatives held a ribbon cutting to mark this important milestone.
The U.S. 101: Urban Upgrades project began in 2024 and revitalized this key stretch of highway. The $14.5 million investment addresses aging infrastructure, brings curb ramps into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and improves connections for people walking, biking, riding the bus or driving through town.
Key improvements include:
- Rebuilt and repaved U.S. 101 between 1st Street and 12th Street.
- Upgraded sidewalks and ADA-accessible curb ramps, including rail crossings on 3rd Street and 7th Street.
- Improved water drainage throughout the corridor.
- Added designated bus stop pull-outs to improve transit access.
- Enhanced street signs and wayfinding through downtown.
“U.S. 101 is more than just a highway here—it’s the main street of Garibaldi,” said Matthew Johnson, Assistant Resident Engineer on this project. “This project reflects our shared commitment to maintaining and improving it for future generations.”
Final touches, including landscaping and small site work, are expected to be completed later this year.
“The Garibaldi community has been incredibly supportive and patient throughout construction,” said Bill Jablonski, Area 1 Manager. “These upgrades make the highway not just safer, but more welcoming and functional for all.”
As part of the Garibaldi Days celebration, city leaders and ODOT representatives held a ribbon cutting to mark this important milestone. The ceremony recognized the strong partnership between the community, city and state in delivering lasting improvements for residents, businesses and visitors.

While ODOT’s funding crisis is having a profound impact on maintenance and operations, most projects will continue. These projects are typically funded through separate programs, often with state or federal funds that are legally restricted to project development and cannot be used for maintenance or day-to-day operations.
