These extremely high tides occur when the moon’s orbit comes closest to the earth, the earth’s orbit is closest to the sun, and the sun, moon and earth are in direct alignment, increasing their gravitational pull on the tides.
What to remember
• Always check tide charts and weather before heading out
• Stay back from logs and driftwood — they move faster than you think
• King tides bring the highest water levels of the year
• Never turn your back on the ocean
Be aware of the danger that these massive tides pose and use extreme caution near the water. King Tides can be exciting to watch, but do so from a distance, as damages to life and property can occur. For more information on this year’s King Tides, click here: https://www.oregonkingtides.net/
