Our Father – Clifford William Scovell
Arrived: June 16, 1926 Departed: January 29, 2026
Born to Basil and Josephine Scovell, he grew up on his family farm in Nehalem and later served in World War II. He married Adele Kathleen Schmitz on September 1, 1946. Cliff joined with Walter and Earl Newberg to form the Newberg and Scovell Logging Company. They worked together until 1983 when all three retired. Adele passed away in 1997, after a long illness. Cliff later married Gloria Slusser on June 7, 2001. Cliff and Adele had 5 children, Marie, Susan, Clifford (Leith), Jerome, David (Cheri) and with Gloria 2 stepchildren, Lauren and Dale (Sherry). He had 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Our father was many wonderful things: a logger, farmer, loving husband, father, uncle, and friend. Playful, understanding, and generous to his family and friends, his strength was not a power to batter and bully others, but a calm, loving presence that made you feel safe, no matter what you had to face. Love was unconditional, something joyful and freely given to all who came to within reach of his gentle hugs. He was generous to a fault, forever opening his home to all who needed it. Giving us a place of safety, calm, joy and love, in an otherwise troubled world. He laughed not at us but with us. He loved watching Saturday morning cartoons with us. He had a joyful, infectious laugh, we were helpless to ignore. A happily remembered playfulness we knew as children and later as adults. The wide-eyed, eager looks of giggling children, waiting for him to find the rubber spider in his pudding, or looking around excitedly for the imaginary elephant outside while he stole a bite of their ice-cream. We were blessed to have him as our father and can’t even begin to say how much we will miss him.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at the White Clover Grange, 36585 Highway 53, Nehalem on Saturday March 14th from 2 to 4 pm.
