After talking with many people in our community, it’s become obvious to me that many are completely in the dark about the issues Will Chappell of the Headlight-Herald and Laura Swanson of the Tillamook Pioneer have been reporting on since it was first revealed that seven formal complaints had been filed regarding the Tillamook County District Attorney’s Office and an independent investigator was hired.
I also know that some people distrust the media and can’t believe something like this could be happening in our own community. That’s why I believe it’s important to find out for yourself and read the primary documents whenever possible.

In my opinion, unless we hold our elected county officials accountable to the oath of office they took, we become part of the problem by remaining on the sidelines instead of taking the time to become informed.
I recently attended a court proceeding involving District Attorney Aubrey Olson. Based on what I personally observed, I came away believing that the plea agreement did not adequately serve the interests of the victim or reflect the seriousness of the allegations. In fact, to put it mildly, I was horrified as were the other two people that attended. That is my opinion based on what we witnessed in court.
I also read about the case involving John Dennie Johnson, who was originally indicted on multiple serious rape and sex abuse felony charges against minors before later entering a plea agreement on fewer charges-from 12 by the Grand Jury, to 3 for the plea agreement. Reading about that case, together with what I observed in court, left me asking difficult questions about how plea agreements are reached, whether victims’ interests are being fully protected, and whether these outcomes best serve public safety.
In my opinion, these cases raise important questions that deserve public discussion. I also believe it is fair to ask what role the courts, prosecutors, and other parts of the justice system each play in these outcomes.
Please take the time to read the investigative report and reach your own conclusions. If, after reviewing the facts for yourself, you believe changes in leadership are necessary, I hope you’ll make your voice heard through the appropriate civic channels*. Whether you agree with me or not, I believe our community is strongest when its citizens are informed and engaged.
