Astoria Chapter DAR meets Oct. 21 at the Astoria Golf and Country Club

Posted on October 5, 2026 by Cara Mico, Assistant Editor

The Astoria Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Astoria Golf and Country Club. Members are invited, and so are women who are interested in membership. Reservations should go to Registrar Sue Glen by Monday, Oct. 19, at (503) 861-0574.

The chapter meets from September through May. The October meeting is at the club’s usual place for these gatherings, 33445 Sunset Beach Lane in Warrenton. The reservation is with the registrar, not with the club.

The Astoria Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, was organized in 1920 and chartered in 1921 with 23 members. It is the north coast chapter of the Oregon State Society. The national society was founded in 1890. Its stated purposes are historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Oregon’s state society was organized in 1914 and now has 29 chapters.

Local work has stayed close to Clatsop County. The chapter has placed historic markers in the community, including a 1924 marker at the site of the original settlement of Astoria. Members planted a Minuteman red maple at the reconstruction of the 1852 U.S. Custom House in downtown Astoria. On Flag Day, June 14, the chapter holds a public ceremony at Fort Stevens State Historical Park to retire worn American flags. The U.S. Flag Code says a flag that is no longer a fitting emblem for display should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. The community is invited to that ceremony. Flags are collected ahead of the date.

During the year the chapter supplies books and crayons for the children’s libraries at Columbia Memorial Hospital and Providence Seaside Hospital, and provides refreshments for visiting troops at Camp Rilea in Warrenton. It also sponsors student work in American history. In 2025, Josephine Giles, a fifth-grade student at Lewis and Clark Elementary School in Astoria, was named the state winner of the Junior American Citizens poster contest. Her poster marked the 250th birthday of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Membership is open to women 18 and older who can document lineal descent from a person who aided the American cause between April 19, 1775, and Nov. 26, 1783. Accepted service includes military service, civil service under the provisional or new state governments, and patriotic service such as committee work, an oath of allegiance, or signing a petition recognizing the new government. The national society states that eligibility does not depend on race, religion, or ethnic background. An applicant documents each generation back to the patriot ancestor. A chapter registrar helps with that paperwork. Women who are not sure whether a line qualifies can still come to the meeting or call and ask.

The chapter’s site is astoriachapterdar.weebly.com. Membership rules are at dar.org. The Oregon State Society site is oregondar.org.
Women who want to attend on Oct. 21, or who want to ask about joining, should call Registrar Sue Glen at (503) 861-0574 by Oct. 19.
