Cannon Beach Lifeguards Rescue Five Swimmers from Dangerous Rip Current Near Haystack Rock on Tuesday July 21st; Repeated Warnings by Lifeguards about Dangerous Conditions “Not Taken Seriously”

On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at approximately 4:09 p.m., Cannon Beach Fire District Lifeguards were patrolling the beach just south of Haystack Rock when they observed a group of eight individuals in the ocean, with five of them in distress after becoming caught in a powerful rip current.
Lifeguards immediately notified dispatch and initiated a water rescue. Two lifeguards entered the water while the Cannon Beach Fire Surf Rescue Team responded in support and staged on the beach with Rescue Watercraft (RWCs).
The first lifeguard reached a swimmer who had reportedly gone face-down due to exhaustion and safely returned the patient to shore. The second lifeguard simultaneously assisted the remaining four distressed swimmers safely back to the beach.
Cannon Beach Fire District EMS personnel, alongside Medix Ambulance Service, evaluated and treated all five patients for mild hypothermia. None required transport and all were released at the scene.

Following the rescue, a family member acknowledged, “We did not take the lifeguards’ warnings seriously.”

The rescued swimmers were part of a larger group of 15 visiting Cannon Beach. Prior to the incident, lifeguards made three separate contacts with the group, warning them about the dangerous rip currents and submerged rocks in the area south of Haystack Rock, commonly known as “The Needles” or the “Bone Yard.” Lifeguards instructed the group to stay in knee-deep water, wear wetsuits, and avoid entering the hazardous area. Despite these repeated warnings, members of the group returned to the water. As lifeguards attempted to make a fourth contact and direct the group back to shore, they observed several members in visible distress and immediately transitioned from prevention efforts to an active rescue.
“If not for the diligence of the lifeguards, this incident would have almost certainly resulted in a fatality and recovery operation rather than a rescue. Their rapid response unquestionably saved lives,” said Fire Chief Marc Reckmann, Incident Commander.
Chief Reckmann also recognized the significant transformation of the Cannon Beach Lifeguard Program since the Cannon Beach Fire District assumed responsibility in 2024. Through updated policies, enhanced operational procedures, and a comprehensive training program that is now nationally recognized and certified by the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA), the Fire District has continued to invest in preparing its lifeguards to provide the highest level of professional ocean safety and rescue services.
This incident is a testament to the value of prevention, training, and professionalism. The lifeguards recognized the hazards, made multiple attempts to prevent this incident through education, and when the emergency unfolded, they responded with exceptional skill and teamwork.
“None of this would be possible without the continued support of the Cannon Beach community, our Fire District leadership, and the dedication of our Ocean Safety personnel,” said Capt. Koa Lyu, Ocean Safety Division Head.

The Cannon Beach Fire District reminds all visitors that rip currents can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers.
• Always follow lifeguard instructions and posted warnings.
• Stay in shallow water (approximately knee deep) and keep your feet on the sand.
• Wear appropriate thermal protection, such as a wetsuit, when entering the Pacific Ocean.
• Never underestimate the strength of rip currents or cold-water conditions.
• If caught in a rip current, remain calm, conserve energy, and swim parallel to the shoreline—never directly against the current.

The Cannon Beach Fire District thanks its Ocean Safety Division, Medix Ambulance Service, and Seaside Fire & Rescue for their coordinated response. The District remains committed to protecting the public through education, prevention, and professional ocean rescue services.
