The eastern section of the Loop Trail at Nehalem Bay State Park has been closed due to multiple cougar sightings. For your safety, please remain off this section of trail while the signs and caution ribbon are up.

- Hike In Groups – and make noise
- Stay Alert
- Keeps Dogs On Leash
- Carry Bear Spray or Air Horn
- Don’t Run
- Make Eye Contact
- Appear Large – raise arms, hold small children, don’t bend over
- Make Noise – shout, yell, wave arms, throw objects, don’t scream
If you encounter a cougar: stay calm, back away while facing it. Give it a way to escape. Use bear spray if a cougar approaches you. Fight back if attacked using sticks, rocks, catnip won’t help.
