LOWER NEHALEM COMMUNITY TRUST UPCOMING EVENTS: Where Have All the Sea Otters Gone?; Community Garden Signups; Salmonberry Trail Updates & More

Posted on January 28, 2025 by Editor

Where Have All The Sea Otters Gone?

Wednesday, January 29th, 6PM @ Pine Grove Community House

Oregon once had a flourishing population of sea otters. Since about 1910, we have had none. What happened? The Lower Nehalem Community Trust hosts a presentation on Wednesday evening at the Pine Grove Community House in Manzanita by Cameron La Follette, a coastal historian and the Executive Director of Oregon Coast Alliance. Her overview of the history of the fur trade and local hunting in Oregon will trace the disappearance of our sea otters, how it happened, and who some of the major players were. Doors open at 5:30PM and the presentation will begin at 6PM. We hope to see you there!

2025 COMMUNITY GARDEN REGISTRATION
Opens Saturday, February 1st
Join us as a community garden volunteer to enjoy garden training and education, harvest sharing, and support plant donations to local food scarcity partners. Located at Alder Creek Farm and Natural Area in Nehalem, the Lower Nehalem Community Trust (LNCT) Community Garden season runs from late February through October with “work parties” on Tuesdays and Saturdays, 9am-noon, rain or shine. Registration opens on Saturday, all are welcome! Watch for our update on Saturday, and visit the Garden Guidelines webpage to learn more.

LOCAL UPDATES ON THE SALMONBERRY TRAIL
Monday, February 3rd, Noon in the NCRD Gallery
Join Salmonberry Trail Foundation Executive Director Caroline Fitchett for an update on the progress and future plans for building the Salmonberry Trail in 2025 and beyond. She will outline the construction priorities to build 8 miles of trail over the next two years, including key segments in Wheeler, Rockaway Beach, Tillamook, and Washington County. Caroline will also spotlight the vital contributions of volunteers, key partnerships, and the trail’s potential to transform our region. The Salmonberry Trail Foundation looks forward to connecting with members of the North Coast community, answering your questions about priorities, and sharing opportunities to get involved in this exciting effort.
