NEWS UPDATE FROM STATE REPRESENTATIVE DAVID GOMBERG: Something for Everyone During “Leg Days”

Posted on December 5, 2022 by Editor

By Representative David Gomberg, House District 10

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

This week the Legislature will hold a series of committee hearings for the last of our quarterly “Leg Days” prior to the 2023 session that begins in January and continues until June 25.

People often ask me about Leg Days and what your legislature is doing when not in formal session. I tell them that committees meet to discuss possible legislation and issues of concern. For my report this week, I thought I’d provide a bit more detail in the hopes you might find some hearings worth watching.

Among the lists below, you will find updates from the Oregon State Police on the implementation of Measure 114 (new rules for the purchase of firearms), a presentation I will lead on Investments in Rural Economic Development, a $2 million federal grant for NOAA to purchase land on Cape Foulweather and place it in conservation status, Universal Health Care, how sports events affect rural communities, a report on Trends in Health Costs, Seismic Safety, and updates on Wildfire Recovery. Those are just a few examples. But whatever your interest, I’m sure there are subjects being reviewed that effect and interest you.

Using the links to committee webpages you can see the actual agendas and support materials, members of the committees, and who will be testifying on each of the agenda items. You can also use the link on the right side of the page to watch the Committees live or later in recorded form.

For the first time since February 2020, committee meetings will be in person at the Capitol, though many of those providing invited testimony will do so via Microsoft Teams.

Many thanks to Senator Michael Dembrow for assembling these materials. He too has an excellent newsletter which you can subscribe to here.

I spent the weekend at a legislative retreat getting to know many of the new members and hearing details and policy updates for the coming session. Housing and homelessness will certainly be at the top of the list! But Saturday night I came home, dressed up, and joined Susan at the renewal of the Angels Anonymous Ball and Festival of Trees. Angels Anonymous is a non-profit foundation working to provide immediate and basic services to those in need in the greater Lincoln City area. About 200 people were in attendance.

Most of my time in the coming week will be spent in Salem. But I do plan to join the Pacific City-Nestucca Chamber Banquet on Tuesday and the Health District Gala in Newport Saturday. It definitely appears to be the gala season!

I’ll be visiting Alsea on Saturday in the newer part of our district with Commissioner Jacobson from Lincoln County and Commissioner Xan from Benton. Tuesday, I meet with the leadership of the Connie Hansen Garden to discuss the Phytophthora blight that threatens our rhododendrons and other native plans. I’ll do business grand openings at the James Lukinich Gallery and at Dominos. And I hope to drop by the Surfrider Volunteer Party.

Please enjoy this festive and celebratory season and remember to drive carefully on our cold and wet roads as I always do.
