The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in consultation with the State of Oregon, the Pacific Fishery Management Council, and fishery representatives met today via conference call and have taken the following in-season management action related to the ocean recreational non-mark-selective coho salmon season from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain:
ACTION TAKEN:
- Effective Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 11:59PM, the recreational fishery from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain is closed to the retention of coho salmon. The season remains open for all salmon except coho (Chinook salmon, 24” minimum length) with a daily bag limit of two salmon.
RATIONALE:
The Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain non-mark-selective (no fin-clip required) coho fishery opened on Tuesday September 1, 2026, with a quota of 25,700 coho salmon. As of Wednesday September 9, the coho salmon catch was estimated at 17,705 or approximately 69% of the total quota. Forecasting the coho harvest for the remainder of the season indicates that the quota will be exceeded by the scheduled end date of September 30. Fishery managers predict the fishery will reach 98% quota attainment at the end of the day on Saturday September 12 and, therefore, agreed to close the fishery to the retention of coho at the end of the day on Saturday September 12, 2026.
Anglers are reminded that following the closure to coho retention the fishery from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain remains open for all salmon except coho, with a two salmon daily bag limit through October 31, 2026, and the minimum size limit for Chinook is 24”.
