OREGON DEPT. OF FORESTRY: Wildland Fire Situation Report 7/27/26

There are approximately 12,417 personnel assigned to the 34 large fires across the state, not including many of the local and agency government employees, landowners, forestland operators, and members of the community who are contributing every day.

Initial attack remains ODF’s top priority.

Prevention: With extreme fire weather conditions across the state, the Oregon Department of Forestry, along with other fire managers across Oregon, are urging Oregonians and those visiting our state to exercise extreme caution and help prevent wildfires. Check local restrictions, avoid activities that could cause a spark, stay clear of firefighting operation areas and follow local evacuation and emergency alerts.

Weather: A persistent pattern will keep the Northwest between Great Basin high pressure and offshore low pressure near British Columbia. Marine air will continue pushing onshore west of the Cascades, moderating conditions except in the interior valleys of southwest Oregon. Eastern areas will see daily breezy to windy conditions with much lower humidity, especially across southeast Oregon. Disturbances Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday will enhance winds, with the strongest winds Saturday when warmer temperatures and lower humidity increase fire weather concerns across the Columbia Basin and Cascade east slopes. Thursday also brings a modest chance of thunderstorms with limited rainfall and potential for new ignitions over the northeast Oregon mountains. Overnight humidity recovery east of the Cascades will remain only moderate at best, with many areas struggling to reach 50 percent for more than a few hours.

ODF Highlight: From the ODF Southwest District, Orville Eary and his family have a long history of fighting fire across the state, and in particular, southern Oregon. With three generations on the line, the Earys have been working for and with ODF since the 1970s. After fighting a few fires along East Evans Creek in the 90s, Orville stopped by to see his family currently engaged on the line last week.

Orville started at the ODF Southwest Oregon District as a seasonal forest officer, eventually moving into equipment development and serving on ODF Incident Management Team 2. His sister Diana served as well on ODF IMT 1, providing financial support on incidents and on the district, and his brother Bruce worked as a bulldozer swamper, guiding dozer operators on the fireline.

Orville’s son, Glenn started the second generation running a nine-person crew and working as a relief bulldozer operator for ODF. His brother, Jim, was on a fire crew. Their sons, Michael and Justin, are also involved in the family business, providing IRA-contracted work on an engine and bulldozer here on the East Evans Creek Fire.

This isn’t the first fire their family has fought in this area; in 1993, Orville and Glenn both responded to the East Evans Creek Fire, and in 1994, the Hull Mountain Fire. This generational knowledge of the area has been appreciated on the fireline over the years up to today.
