Continuing our tour of North Coast hiking trails, I ventured up to Soap Stone Lake.
Tucked away just off Highway 53, before the junction with Highway 26, lies a hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest: Soap Stone Lake. This secluded spot offers a unique blend of tranquility and adventure, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat or a refreshing dip in the lake’s cool waters.
The journey to Soap Stone Lake is a bit of a trek, but it’s well worth the effort. The trailhead is easily accessible, with ample parking and plenty of space. The trail itself, however, is a bit more challenging. With several steep inclines, large stairs, and a narrow log bridge crossing, it’s not suitable for people with mobility devices and may be a bit strenuous for those without recent hiking experience. But for those up to the challenge, the trail offers a rewarding hike through a beautiful forest landscape.
Once you reach the lake, you’ll find a peaceful haven that’s perfect for swimming, picnicking, or simply relaxing. The lake is shallow, with a few accessible spots for swimmers among the weedy reeds and slippery logs. It’s just warm enough for swimming in the summer months, but cool enough to keep mosquitoes at bay. And with its secluded location, it’s not uncommon to have the lake all to yourself—a rare treat in the busy summer season.
However, the lake’s unguarded nature means it’s best to only bring children if they are experienced swimmers and can be closely supervised. And while the lake’s remote location makes it less suitable for large groups, it’s perfect for those seeking a quiet, peaceful retreat.
The area around Soap Stone Lake is unimproved, so don’t expect to find lakeside fire pits. But what it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in natural beauty. The lake is surrounded by mature conifers, providing plenty of shade for those hot summer days. And the higher elevation often means clear blue skies, even when the coast is shrouded in fog.
In the coming weeks, visitors to Soap Stone Lake can expect to see countless dragonflies and salamanders, and there are still some berries to be found. Just remember to bring water and food, as it’s a bit of a walk back to your car.
One final note: the trailhead has been the site of some car break-ins, so be sure to lock up your belongings. While most visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience, it’s always best to take precautions.
Soap Stone Lake is a hidden oasis that offers a unique blend of tranquility and adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual nature lover, it’s a destination worth exploring. Just remember to respect the wildlife, leave no trace, and savor every moment of your journey through this remarkable landscape.
