THE OCEANSIDER: House on the Hill Hotel Developer to Speak at ONA Meeting Saturday April 6th

Posted on March 31, 2024 by Editor
By Jerry Keene, Editor, The Oceansider
Happy Easter!
The Saturday April 6th Oceanside Neighborhood Association meeting (see calendar below) will feature a presentation by the development consortium seeking to replace the former House on the Hill with a new luxury hotel. ONA President Sharon Brown and the Oceanside Protection Society invited the group’s spokesman, Nile Hagen, to provide an update and hear community input on the group’s vision for the proposed facility. Hagan indicated that he is aware of the presentation offered by Fusion Lodging regarding their proposed hotel at the Oceanside Cabins site and understands the special scrutiny such projects receive in Oceanside.
Last month, The Oceansider interviewed Hagen for a preliminary status report on the project. During it, he indicated that he is a “child of Oregon” who grew up visiting relatives in Cape Meares and appreciates the iconic nature of what he termed a “very special Oregon landmark.” Instead of the type of “60-unit” hotel that some developers have proposed, Hagen indicated his group envisions 23-24 high-end units (with “lots of glass”) priced at roughly $800 a night, which he said was comparable to other luxury oceanfront facilities in Oregon and is the minimum required for it to pencil out financially. Hagen indicated that the group does not intend to seek any variances from the 24-foot height limit applicable to the oceanfront portion of the site. The planned compound will also include a guest-only restaurant (necessitated by parking constraints), a conference room and other “amenities.”  Hagen also stated that the compound would be “eco-friendly, net zero and may even include green roofs and similar features.”  He indicated that the design will be “a bit more modern” than that announced for the Fusion Lodging hotel. Hagen plans to provide The Oceansider with “high quality renderings” of the proposed design so that it can publish them prior to the April 6 ONA meeting. He indicated that the design will be “a bit more modern” than that announced for the Fusion Lodging hotel.
Fire Chief Tim Carpenter Formally Announces His Retirement
This week, Chief Tim Carpenter provided The Oceansider with his last annual “Community Letter” after more than 25 years of service and asked that we share it with our readers. In the letter, Carpenter confirmed that he intends to retire as Chief of the Netarts-Oceanside Fire District
at the end of June. He also indicated that his successor has been chosen by the NOFD Board of Directors and will be announced as soon as certain administrative details have been worked out. “With your input,” Carpenter stated, “I’m confident that the fire district will experience a smooth transition.” The letter included information about recent personnel changes and offered performance statistics for this past year.  The latter included a summary of how improving performance over his years of service has helped constrain local property insurance rates. In closing, the Chief stated, “Thank you for the years of support, and we hope to see you all at the Firefighters Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, April 13, 2024!”

“The Wave” Eliminates Most Bus Trips Between Oceanside and Tillamook

The Tillamook County Transportation District (“TCTD”) has eliminated three out of the five daily trips by The Wave bus that provides service between Tillamook and Oceanside. The changes take effect on March 31 (today!). Buses from the Oceanside Community Hall to Tillamook (“Route 2”) will now only run at 9:30 a.m. and 1:55 p.m. The change was just one of several major service reductions announced by TCTD Executive Director Bob Vitulli in response to staff shortages and other challenges. The other reductions include elimination of these trips:

  • 7:00 PM Route 1 (Town Loop) – last trip of each day
  • One (1) out of four (4) Route 6 (Port of Tillamook Bay) roundtrips
  • The 4:55 AM Route 5 roundtrip to Portland

Brochures reflecting the revised schedules can be accessed at the Tillamook County Transportation District website (scroll up and click the “Schedules, Routes, Fares” tab).
