VFW Post 2848 support USCG and furloughed civilian federal employees veterans; Garibaldi Bay Market collects food & More Community Support

Posted on January 24, 2019 by Editor

At the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) VFW Post 2848 meeting in Bay City, a decision was made to provide $500 to CARE, Inc. in the relief effort. The VFW Post placed the following priority on the donation:
1st – Active Duty US Coast Guard servicemembers and their families; 2nd – Civilian federal workers that are veterans. Any remaining funds that are not distributed, the VFW wants the money to be applied towards supporting veterans that meet the financial need criteria for the monthly Tillamook County Transportation District bus pass.
CARE, Inc. has managed a veteran transportation donation from the Elks Lodge in the past. The VFW donation that is not dispersed during the federal furlough would be used in a similar fashion to the Elks Lodge donation.

Coast Guard and furloughed Federal workers in need of assistance should contact CARE Inc. at 503-842-5261 or visit their offices at 2310 First St., Suite 2, Tillamook. CARE can provide a variety of services and can also connect those in need with other available community resources.

Garibaldi’s Bay Market – Food Drive
The impact of the partial government shutdown has affected our local Coast Guard members so we are working with our vendors to supply meat, poultry, produce, bread and other perishable groceries. This is where you come in! If you would like to help, there is a grocery cart near the front entrance of the store for the community to leave non-perishable items for the local Coast Guard members and their families. We would like to thank Reser’s Fine Foods, Frito-Lay, Charlie’s Produce, Franz Bread and Buckmaster Coffee for supporting this food drive!

Manzanita Beach Rentals, Tora Sushi, Hook, Line & Sinker and other local businesses are also providing discounts and meals for the Coast Guard and Federal workers. There are also dozens of businesses in Clatsop County that are providing meals, services, and more. See the Tillamook County Facebook page – as these are being posted online, we are sharing them on our page. If you know of a Tillamook County business or organization providing relief for the Coast Guard and Federal workers, please email information to editor@tillamookcountypioneer.net or message on Facebook. For details about how to connect with temporary food pantry at the Port of Garibaldi, please contact the Port at 503-322-3292.
