About the Sculpture
Marine Layer, 2026
Powdercoated metal, stainless steel hardware, concrete

Fabrication by: DaxFab
Marine Layer is a sculptural gateway inspired by the ever-present weather of the Oregon Coast. It celebrates the environmental forces that shape Manzanita’s landscapes from Neahkahnie Mountain to the Hoffman Wonder Garden.
The piece honors the region’s rugged beauty and the role weather plays in both artistic inspiration and daily life, reflecting on the Hoffman Center’s function as a creative refuge year-round.
Drawing loosely from the ideas and forms of a Torii gate, the sculpture uses vertical scale, visual weight, and color to frame the garden at a human level while also acting as a visual landmark along Laneda Avenue.
This project was made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Schpee Foundation.
About the Artist
Juan Ferreira is a Colombian-born multidisciplinary artist and design professional based in Nehalem, Oregon.
His practice occupies the fertile space between art, furniture, and architecture — blurring the boundary between aesthetic expression and utility while challenging conventional ideas of space, form, and function.
Since relocating to the Oregon Coast in 2022, Juan’s work has been increasingly shaped by the region’s rugged landscapes, its distinctive architectural vernaculars, and the flora and fauna that define this environment.
