May we take time to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of the dedication of our armed forces, and remember the families who continue to carry their memory forward.
What Memorial Day Asks of Us
Memorial Day can carry mixed emotions: festive beach parties and backyard gatherings on one hand, solemn remembrance on the other. But perhaps the two aren’t so mismatched, as we spend time with those important in our lives and recognize the sacrifice of others.
The laughter of children and neighbors chatting easily over fences — these are examples of freedoms our fallen service members gave their lives to protect. Recognizing that connection gives the holiday its meaning, and leaves us with a question to carry into the rest of the year: Are we doing enough to further strengthen the communities they died for?
Our veterans and those that died in service deserve our respect and honor, and what better way to honor them to be of service in your community.

The Nehalem Valley Historical Society hosts a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Nehalem American Legion Cemetery at 11:00 AM. on Monday, May 25, rain or shine. The event has grown over the years to be a special recognition for those who have served. Every year we have found a new way to honor our service men and women. This year we will have members of the Coast Guard present to tell us the significance of each fold of the flag.
The City of Rockaway Beach will host a Memorial Day Service at the Wayside starting at 10 am, the US Coast Guard will present the colors, Father Akuri from St. Mary’s by the Sea will provide a spiritual reflection, Mayor McNeilly will present Memorial Remarks, followed by the reading of the names of community veterans lost, and the event will conclude with a moment of silence.
Sunset Heights Memorial Gardens off Trask River Road in Tillamook will conduct a Memorial Day Service, to include the reading of the names of veterans lost in Tillamook County this year at 11 am.
